Several have been launched over recent years

A couple we particularly recommend:

Cheerful Book Club: the book club for optimists. Ed Milliband and friends in conversation with authors, mostly focusing on contemporary non-fiction. But a recent episode, 27/2/20,featured Ian McEwan talking about his new novel Machines Like Me (see above). A really interesting conversation.

BBC Books and Authors: includes Harriet Gilbert’s A Good Read and Mariella Frostrup’s Open Book. Both of these are always excellent.

Open Book’s main guest on Sunday was Petina Gappah talking about her fascinating novel Out of Darkness, Shining Light that takes a fictional look at the life of the explorer Dr. David Livingstone. And as part of the BBC’s 100 novels that shaped the world, writer Patrick Flanery discusses Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls.

The most recent A Good Read (17/3/20) features Sharleen Spiteri, the Scottish recording artist who selected a contemporary thriller The Secretary by Renee Knight and the actor Hugh Dennis who selected Hawksmoor by Peter Ackroyd. Harriet’s choice was Caitlin Moran’s How to be a Woman.

Unrelated to Harriet’s podcast but do have a look at a short film from Caitlin Moran – she is brilliant. www.caitlinmoran,co.uk/how-to-be-a-woman-short-film/
